So im 19, i just finished my first year of college. i skated by with a's and b's with not too much effort. i am in summer school and this is hard! it makes me not want to be in school. i know i can do it, and maybe its cuz its summer and its so rigorous. Cops make dam good money, and you only need to be 20 to take the test and 21 to get hired. i live in san francisco. I was thinking of going to school until i turn 21. but sometimes i just want to quit school all-together. i mean, i am majoring in nursing and i hate my nutrition class; which is not a good sign. being realistic, i dont want to be in school for years and years. cops make like $73,000 starting salary and have good benifits and all of this great stuff. a part of me wants more from myself though, like more ambition, ya know? but then again a part of me just wants the money and thats basically why im going to school anyways - to get a degree, and hence, make money. i would be a good cop, b/c i am a very fair guy. advice?

They always say to do what you love, but it's true that money and time are really big factors in life.

If you really do want to be a cop and can see yourself enjoying the job, then I say go for it.

But do not forget about education. While education seems like such a long time and may not have so many immediate benefits, a college degree really does mean a lot. Only about 15% of Americans have a bachelors degree, and the number becomes much smaller for continued school. It is quite the honor and privilege to be a college graduate, it holds a certain amount of prestige as well. Also, if you plan on having any children, the probability that they will continue on with education is much higher if their parents are themselves college graduates of some sort.

So basically, education, while it's results are not immediately apparent can have very strong effects in the future--you can learn much more in college aside from just what you have to learn for your degree, like information about social injustices and many other things that the general public is unexposed to.

Nevertheless, do what you are interested in. This is only advice for you, not a life plan for you. If being a cop satisfies you, then by all means go for it. But if you feel that education even has the smallest possibility of being something in your life, then I say continue on with college because you are only beginning to learn how powerful education can be.

I wish you well in the future!

Stay in school buddy!
Nutrition is not what nursing is all about. the fact that you've come this far shows that there is a nurse somewhere inside of you, all you have to do is dig it out. being a fair guy will not only help you with being a cop but also with being a Nurse. from what you have written about yourself....I don't really think law enforcement maybe your thing.

stay in school at least to think about it a bit longer. also, don't base you decision on money, because that would really be dumb. nurses have flexible lives and get paid well, the more experience you have the higher your salary is. Also you could become a nurse manager, and have an even more flexible work schedule as well as a better salary.

Think about it!

More and more law enforcement officers have bachelors' degrees these days, and since you can't do it until you are 21 anyway, I would stay in school for now. Even if you go for the test as soon as you are eligible, you could finish your degree while working, because it will give you far more opportunities down the road.

Do what you know you would love doing, and not for the money. By the way, cops do NOT make 73 grand a year to start, hell, you'll be lucky to ever make that as a cop, even in San Fransisco.

Finish school. I guarantee you that at some point in your career as a cop, you're going to hate it even if the feeling doesn't last. Having a degree will provide options.

stay at college. cops with college educations get promotions quicker and pass up the ranks quicker than others who have not got that. (possibly reason its extra convenient for them to take the checks).
