Simple meaning of compass:
An Instrument consisting of a magnetized needle, used to find directions.
Meaning of compass:
Navigation instrument used by airmen, mariners, or other travelers as an aid in finding their way from one point to another. The conventional compass is essentially a magnetically sensitive vane that indicates the general direction of either the North or South Pole. Another type, the gyrocompass, obtains directivity from a spinning gyroscope.
NAVIGATION:
Navigation means finding your way. At first it meant finding 'your way at sea'. But people now travel by air and send up spaceships. So navigation has come to include finding direction in air or in space.
Magnetic Compass:
To understand the magnetic compass, one may consider the earth as a large permanent magnet, with magnetic line of force flowing beteween the two magnetic poles. A magnetic needle suspended within these line of force will align itself parallel to them and exhabit a "pole-seeking-sensivity" greatest at the equator and at least at the poles themselves. It should be noted that the magnetic pole of the earth differ considerably in geographic location from the true geographic poles and that the actual location of the magnetic poles vary from year to year. The fact that a magnetic compass does not point to the true poles was well known to navigators as early as the time of Christopher Columbus; this was compensated for by aligning the graduation on the compass askew the magnetic north so that the compass would indicate the direction of the true pole. The actual degree of variance between the magnetic poles and the true poles at various points on the earth's surface was not so well known.
These are call magnetic North.

"An ordinal, or intercardinal, direction is one of the four intermediate compass directions located halfway between the cardinal directions."
Or did you just mean: northeast, northwest, southeast, southwest.
