I write a lot of poetry. My first poem was published when I was 15 years old. Everyone has a different way that works best for them.

I write my best poetry when I am sad, depressed, or angry. My feelings are always incredibly evident in my poetry. I have written some poems about passion and happiness but very few because they do not produce as good of work as the other ones do.

Also, your favorite poet is usually a good indicator of what you will write like. For example, my favorite poet is Poe. Hence the dark and dreary themes of many of my works. Ralph Waldo Emerson is a close second along with Shel Silverstein. There are others too, but those are where my main influences stem from.

My best advice would be never to let someone tell you how to write. Even if you don't follow the rules for stanzes or rhyming or whatever else, it does not deter from the value of the poem unless the poem is devoid of emotion. Write what feels right...

Good luck!

Poetry is about words and communication. If I say, "ryn der a fyr n de rum!" and then I get angry because nobody is running for the door, I have only myself to blame, because I failed to communicate my meaning. If I say, "run, there is a fire in the room" and nobody leaves, then they deserve everything they get (unless I'm in a foreign country and they don't speak English or they are deaf...then it's my fault again). The point here is to communicate in such a way as to not distract from your point or meaning. If you write something, or ask something and the first reply you get is about your grammar, then you should take the comment to heart and realize that you failed to communicate effectively because what you were asking was overshadowed by how you asked. The reply that told you to use proper English was not trying to put you down, it was trying to show you were you needed to start your improvement. Words matter...it's like driving... just because you can drive a car doesn't mean you don't have to stay on your side of the road and obey the rules. Race car drivers know when they can speed, but they also know when to obey the rules. The same is true with poetry. Yes, you can break the rules and write poetry with "dis" and "dat" and "nuf", but you need to know "when" to use them, and not use them because you're undisciplined and use them because you're too lazy to do it correctly.

That being said, it comes back to what you asked about being "focused". If you were watching a movie you really liked and someone asked you a question, you might not even hear it. Why? Because you were focused. So, if you're writing music or poetry and need to be focused, you need to be "in" the frame of mind that absorbs you...completely. I'll be writing a poem and will not hear my wife ask me a question or an alarm go off, because I'm totally focused on what I'm doing. There is no way to "tell" you how to do it, it's a natural thing if you really want to do something badly enough, you can't help yourself...you just get lost in the groove.

Hope this helps, and remember, the important thing is that you "want" to write, so you're already well on your way.

use real words like what instead of wut. Take your work seriously because if you write like then then you are not.

I was not trying to be a jerk. I was being serious. If you want to be a better writer of anything then having the correct usage of words is rather important, and if you do it now it will help you later on in your writing career.

One of the most important factors in writing songs or poetry is that you are trying to say as much as you can with as little words possible. I suggest getting a dictionary and thesaurus and always check what defitions are and what words can be used in place of other words. Don't forget to use poetical devices as well.
