We tend to take serious the trivial things and leave important issues to sort themselves out.
For instance we spend lots of time following actors and stars yet we knowingly let genocide go on in many places.
As a race we have a real long way to go.

Good question! On balance- I'd say we maybe take ourselves alittle TOO SERIOUSLY... By virtue of our "superior intellect" -we think we have the "right" to superimpose our WILLS- over all the OTHER living things on the Planet... Our Species must come "first" at ALL costs- even when the only "threat" we face may be a lone "challenger" to our well-being (like a rogue wolf, or the odd snake, or an isolated mountainlion). Interestingly enough, the current Global Warming issue plays into this- because we are SERIOUSLY altering many of the Worlds ecosystems...-And if we don't modify our behaviors pretty soon- the consequences are going to be SERIOUS- indeed...

Yes there is.
One could also say :
We are so serious with what we have to do for ourselves that we do not think of what our actions will do to other living beings.
Since we are not serious enough and take no action, we care not about any other living beings.
Two different sides with the same effect.
Interesting thought.

I say both. With serious things we tend to take them lightly yet small things can really get us stirred up. I am glad we surround ourselves with
compassion and have the ability to rationalize
our choices.

really matters what you are taking serious....for a person to take seriously wrinkles or the brand name of their clothing and forget about thousands dead in Iraq or cancer and hiv victims is insane.

You're right, there is always two sides! Congradulations, you answered your own question. If that's not what you meant, well, it still works.
