As a teacher, I believe that 8:30 or 9 am would be a great time to get started, but ending around 5 is not a good option. Students are pretty much out of it by 3 anyway, so although it would be nice to start later, there's simply no time for it!
Also, extracurricular activities would run too late -- staying until 8 for tennis practice? No thanks.

It's a popular position these days, but I have to wonder. Back a generation or so most of us were asleep by 10 or 11 p.m.; I don't know many students today who do that, and consequently, they aren't getting enough sleep. Teenagers need more sleep, and 6 or 7 hours may not be enough for you, but let's say you did start two hours later - would you be prepared to spend the time you now have for your own activities in class later in the day instead?

YES!!!!!!! Naturally the teenage brain goes to bed later and wakes up later. I'm also a senior this year and I know I'm not really awake until lunch period. I think it would be nice for schools to start at 10 and end at 5. I mean it would end later but hey we wouldn't have to be at school till 10 the next day anyway. Students would get better grades if we started later and at my old school well lets just say many math classes were 1st period... no teenagers can function that early! I think that school districts should change their times.

Its a fact, that when your are a teenager, your body clock gets all out of whack, and you naturally want to stay up late and sleep in late, and for the majority of teenagers it is difficult to break that cycle.
Luckily, my high school starts at 8:50am , so not so bad, and we get 10am late starts every other thursday.
But my cousin Nikki, who lives in florida, her high school starts at 7:30! That is when I wake up! LOL.
So yes, I think high school should start later, and from what I have been hearing on the radio, there is a good chance in some places it will soon.

There was a study done about 5 or more years ago but, I don't remember the name of the study. The study showed that it would be better for teenagers to start School latter in the day because, their sleep patterns are changing because of the hormonal changes that are caused by the growth of their bodies. I think it was Psychology report. I hope this helps

Most people are the sharpest early in the morning. If you were to start classes at a later time you could also run into heavier traffic for people who are going to work.
I went through 4 years of getting up at 4:30am to get dressed, eat breakfast, catch the school bus, go to my locker and get to my first class by 6:30am.
You have to for once in your life listen to your parents and get to bed earlier so that you get the sleep you need.

Honestly, yeah. I stay up doing homework and other important things until past midnight, and they expect me to be awake and alert at 8:15 am? Ha! It should be knocked back until at least 9:15. Teens work harder than most people realize, and we deserve some credit for it!
