I have a EHEIM 2128 canister filter that does break the surface.

Air stones don't need to be left on all day, and they are not even needed at all IF you have filtration that breaks the surface of the water (like a hanging power filter or air pump driven filter). If your air stones are the only thing disturbing the surface of the water then you should keep it on at all times.

You'll find many experienced fish keepers, including myself, don't use them because they don't like the noise or look of them because the filters do the job.

Small bubbles or large, both accomlish the same thing - choose which one you like better.

I agree with Madi. The bubbles also perform an important function namely oxygenation.oxygenation: A key factor in the viability of a fish tank is the appropriate oxygenation of the water (whose circulation is assisted by the process). This is usually achieved through the aid of an external pumping device. Few fish tanks are self-oxygenating.You cannot deny
the fish just because nobody watches the bubbles during night.Bubbling is not merely decorative. Both micro and larte bubbles are OK.

Airstones should be left on all day, this helps aerate the water. Having a finer bubbles is better, as this creates more surface area for gas (CO2/O2) to exchange and keep the water well oxyenated.

Leave it on all the time, especially if the fish get oxygen defieciency(all go to the surface to breathe) without it. Micro bubbles are better as they are more effective.

micro bubbles are better there is more bubbles being produced as well as a longer amount of contact time between the water and the bubbles.
