Sims 2 is a powerful game, and if your computer is even a couple years old, Sims 2 has a hard time running on it.
To alleviate the stress on your computer, try shutting down EVERYTHING before you play. Press Ctrl Alt Del to open up the Task manager. Then, make sure all Applications are closed, and move on to the tab labeled Processes. In this you need to use your best judgement as to what to close. You won't damage your computer by shutting anything down in here, but you may need to restart.
If you have virus protection, end that process and disconnect yourself from the internet as well. Other safe programs that are running at low levels and you can end are music programs, updating for Windows and picture center programs.
This will hopefully help improve the shutting down, and also the performance speed.
If that doesn't work, your program might have a bug. Contact the Sims 2 people. There might be a patch you have to install.

These are very heavy games for a lower end system. I think you have a very annoying problem: Your processor gets too hot after playing a while and your computer shuts down automatically as a safety from preventing it to melt or catch fire. You can edit these shut-down temperatures but I wouldn't recommend that as it's very dangerous. I won't tell you how to do this for your own good... I suggest you buy a new PC if you want to play these games.

thats odd... my computer only has 512 mb of ram and a 16mb graphics card and still works rather well!(other than the bad graphics and the bit of lag!) If you have overclocked your graphics card to make games run with better graphics it may be using too much power and either overheating the computer or making a small power surge on the outlet you are using. Try to turn down the settings by hitting f8 i think during startup and tuning down the settings on your graphics card. If this doesn't work runa virus/spyware scan and if it still doesn't work uninstall and reinstall the game. if THIS doesn't work... then i am all out of ideas! =)

Almost the same problem! But it didn't shut down. During and after the installation, the internet keeps going on and off!

It sounds like it is the video card that is doing it. Two things you can do to solve your problem:
1. Update the version for it and get the latest direct version out there.
If that doesn't help, try to downgrade the version of your video card.
2. Lower your video card settings.

Mine does it too, at least I now know that mine isnt the only one that does it.
EDIT:
I have a brand new PC ($8000) gamer computer.
So the answer below me is wrong. I have the same problem and my processer and computer are fine.
