Now the answer ... is plain, but it is so unpalatable that most men will not face it. There is no reason for life and life has no meaning.
— Somerset Maugham, (1874-1965)

I don't think we're here for anything, we're just products of evolution. You can say, “Gee, your life must be pretty bleak if you don't think there's a purpose,” but I'm anticipating a good lunch.
— James Watson (b. 1928), Nobel Prize winner and co-discoverer of DNA molecular structure.

The universe may have a purpose, but nothing we know suggests that, if so, this purpose has any similarity to ours.
— Bertrand Russell

Life has no meaning beyond this reality. But people keep searching for excuses. First there was reincarnation. Then refabrication. Now there's theories of life after amoebas, after death, between death, around death. Now you come back as a shirt, as a pair of pants. If Shirley MacLaine tells some brilliant guy, "There's an ethereal planet that sits right next to a delicatessen in Ethiopia and if you go shop there twice a day, you'll live forever," this putz believes it because he needs an answer from somebody. People call it truth, religion; I call it insanity, the denial of death as the basic truth of life. "What is the meaning of life?" is a stupid question. Life just exists. You say to yourself, "I can't accept that I mean nothing so I have to find the meaning of life so that I shouldn't mean as little as I know I do." Subconsciously you know you're full of ****. I see life as a dance. Does a dance have to have a meaning? You're dancing because you enjoy it.
— Jackie Mason

It certainly seems pointless doesn't it? Is it just a lot of filling time as best we can? Is laying in bed of the same value as feeding a homeless person? What good is love? What bad is there in hate? If this life is all there is then shouldn't I just spend it trying to feel good as much as I can?

You ask the most important question and a question that most people don't really think about.

The simple answer is you are here because God wants you to be here- not to "do" anything for him but merely to know him.

The answer is simple but it is HARD to live it out. Believe me it is hard. People have different personalities, different physical problems, emotional problems; chemical imbalances; different circumstances and experiences all of which complicate life and add to the difficulty of clear thinking.

The truth is; we are not as we should be but God wants to re-create us if we are willing. He will takes us through whatever hardships and pains to get us there but he will gets us there if we are willing.

Our goal is to finish well- we do that by perserving; by getting up each day and do everything in our power to discover the right thing to do; in every situation.

It's not complicated but it is very hard. No one can do it alone; we need God and other people.

Do you know that knowing God is the only thing that other people cannot prevent you from doing? Other people can kill you, injure you, block your dreams; fire you from your job; rob you of your belongings; take everything; but no one can prevent you from seeking and finding God; no one except yourself. That is the goal-the purpose-

That is why you are here. Sometime; a long time ago and long before you were even an egg in your mother's womb; God looked into the future and saw you and loved you.

That is why he allowed you to be born in this time and this age. He knew the life would be hard but he also knew you are worth it.

As several answerers have indicated, life has no point, no goal, no meaning, no purpose UNLESS there is a God, a Creator, who gives life a point, a goal, meaning and purpose.

For those who believe they are created beings, the point of life is to seek their Creator and to be united in fellowship with Him. Through a Creator of all, all are brothers and sisters and so we can seek our Creator through a relationship of love with others.

The idea of life having no meaning is so terrible that we simply cannot bear to fully accept it. We avoid thinking about it by concentrating on some little pleasure we are anticipating or recollecting. As the above answerer told us, "I see life as a dance. Does a dance have to have a meaning? You're dancing because you enjoy it." And in the temporary happiness he finds, he is distracted from thinking about the pointlessness of existence. Distraction (or busyness) and self deception are the two tools that must be employed to avoid insanity or suicide for those who reject a Creator.

I think our Creator put our enormous need for meaning and purpose into our human nature to point us to seek Him.

all these answers are good, BUT, doesn't it seem like sometimes our only purpose is to handle all the **** that others can't handle? there are some people that, when they stumble there is always some one there to catch them and help them along the way. then ,there are others, who can't do any thing right if their life depended on it. and there is no help.
i still believe in god, so i do the best i can with what is dealt to me. we'll all find out some day.
