Microsoft makes a free utility, VirtualPC, that allows you to run a virtual OS on top of your existing OS.
You can get it here.

Partition your hard drive i.e. have a drive 2 or 3 drive letters showing on my computer..but make sure you do a sensible partition with equal space allocation for each OS. Boot up using your XP CD and when they ask you at the partitioning manager screen which drive you want to install XP then select the new partition (oh yes now if you havnt partioned already then you'll have a big problem, you will have to partition it inside of windows using partition manager). Then you install windows and boot up from then normal way and select the op sys of ur choice

You need to first create two partitions, one for each operating system. Once you're done with that, install one of the operating systems (preferably Windows XP first). Then, you install the other one. After that, you install a bootloader so you can choose between which one to boot.
For your case, after you repartition, you should install Windows XP on the second partition first. Once you get that done, you should install Windows Vista on the first partition. It should detect Windows XP and add it to Window's own bootloader. The next time you boot, you can choose which operating system to use.

You will need to start from scratch and Partition your hard drive into 2 sections one with XP the other with Vista you will need both Operating Systems CD's to do this and they will need to be your paid for copies. otherwise it won't work. Split the patition in1/2 and download Vista on C drive your primary drive and then I would name your XP partition F Drive and then you just select the drive you want to access.

Ok, let's see... you transfer ALL your data and wipe the drive. You then partition it into TWO chunks, installing XP FIRST on one, then Vista SECOND on the other. When you boot, it should pop up a message asking which one you want to boot from. Just press enter and you're set!
