Neither is safer but shutting down saves a little power.

Neither is really "safer", but shutting it down will take about the same amount of time and uses less power than leaving the computer on.

Turn it Off!!!

Not only are you wasting electricity, but what's going to stop someone from sitting down and logging on as soon as you leave the room?

I realize that you are most likely talking about a computer in your home - but it only takes a couple of minutes for someone who knows what they're doing to get into your PC. All they have to do is pose as an electrician, plumber, or anyone else you might let into your house ;);)

Essentially, no one really knows.

You will definitely save power by shutting it down, which is about the only sure thing.

If you shut it down and power it up, the computer is heating up and cooling down more often, which can wear out parts.

Then again, if you leave it running, these parts are getting more use, which may shorten their lifetime.

it's a catch22 that I'm not aware anyone has definitively solved

Well it depends on your operating system. Windows XP-Vista Ultimate, is good to shut down because of the system restore feature. The reason why is because your system restore keeps the last good reboot and if you ever have any problems. You will always see the time stamp of last reboot. And for me. Security wise, no one can hack into your network when the machine is off. Another thing, its always good to keep your processor cool. I rather not keep my processor running 24/7. Those are my big things about shutting down a PC.

Shutting down makes more safe to turn off your computer.

leave the computer on. Its more expensive on the electric bill but better for the hard drive. Mine has been on for almost 6 years now. Still pluggin along.

They're probably both quite safe.

However, if you wanna save power, turning it off is a better option!
