the reason I ask is that the mpgs automatically default to realplayer and it won't open there - since I installed realplayer, Media player doesn't default. Does that make sense?

I just went to the site you recommended and when I got to the download portion, a warning came on that said "publisher cannot be verified" and warned that it could be a security risk What now?

No it really depends on which MPEG was used most will recognise and open from any of the present day programs wether it be Microsoft Media Player, Quicktime or most on the market.
Most people that do have a problem is normally from a homeade MPEG that has been assighned a Codec that is either older or newer that the software you are presently using does not recognise.
The use of reqular commercial mpegs are rarely a problem because that are created in the correct format.
