And I'm referring to anything; short story, poetry, ect.
Did you ever have any of your work published in any type of magazine?
How much money do they typically offer? [um, I know this can vary]
When you finally got a response in the mail, what exciting things were said in your letter to let you know your work was wanted?
[just curious :-) ; sounds exciting]

Oh, believe ME!!--I love to write no matter what and was pretty surprised I was asked for a story I wrote back in 1999 for an upcoming book to be published and out on the shelves by spring 2008. :o) .
I've around 35-40 journals [writing for fun &/or passion]
The author just came across my story recently and I was asked several times to submit it for him, so I did.

for one short story they paid me $500. i submitted that story to only 9 places. they emailed me when they accepted it.

on the other hand i've submitted some of my other stories to as many as 50 places and had them rejected everywhere.

my other stories weren't paid at all.

there are no rules here. some places "pay" only copies of the journal. i'm pretty sure everyone emails or calls you when they want to take your work. the mail is too slow.

Considering I was in journalism for three years, I was published regularly. I'm now published each time I write a feature or new tour description with the company I work for.

All I can say is that if writing is a passion, don't give up but don't focus solely on the publishing aspect ormonetary gain (or lack thereof) from it. Writing is hard work and takes a lot of time, energy, and commitment. If all you're seeking is publishing and money, your heart is not in it for the right reasons. Write because you love to write and for no other reason.

As you point out, prices can vary from publisher to publisher. I'm gonna provide you with a website that gives guidlines and links to various book and magazine publishers. You should be able to get an idea of the offered payment from that.

My rejection file is as thick as a Detroit telephone book. A writer must persevere with patience, hard study, and the will to continue writing.
