do i use my thumb?

why have i been told its not good to use my thumb?

Now, whoever told you it's not good to use your thumb is wrong. Every good player uses their thumb at some point. Take Jimi Hendrix for example, he played loads with the use of his thumb!

Some chords cannot be played without your thumb. I use my thumb all the time. You can use it to play bar chords to if you want the high strings open. Something like

A common formation for A5 is XO222O. Accentuate the bottom E string, which is the fifth note on the scale of A.

I have used the thumb to bar my chords and play extra licks ever since I first started to play almost 51 years ago. Only classical guitar students are admonished not to use their thumbs. If it was good enough for Merle Travis and Chet Atkins, it was good enough for me.

i dunno but if u play gutair try gutair hero u might be good at it
