If a lineman (a tackle) is the last player on the line of scrimmage on that side of the ball, the offesnive team can declare the tackle eligible to the referee and yes he may go out for a pass. This is an impractical formation and hardly ever used. That would be what a user is referring to by the "rare tackle eligible play". Other than that, running backs, etc. obviously

A lineman is not an eligible receiver. The only exception would be if he lines up at the end of the line (uncovered) AND reports to the ref prior to the play running. He is then considered an eligible receiver otherwise interior lineman are not.

There are several other positions other than the wide reciever that can receive a pass. Tight End, Running Back and a Full Back... A lineman my recieve a pass as long as he reports to the referee before the play begins and lets it known that he is an eligable reciever.

Only on a tackle eligible play. But the quarterback must ell the official, who tells everyone that the Offensive Tackle # XX is eligible. Besides thst you can only throw the ball to WRs, TEs, RBs, and FBs.

Just a bonus about the tackle eligible play -- IT IS ILLEGAL IN HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL!!!!
In HS play all eligible receivers must wear an eligible number (1-49, 80-99). If you have #65 line up at fullback and he catches a screen pass it is illegal touching 5 yds from spot of foul and loss of down.

Exactly six players at most are allowed to catch a forward pass. These consist of, at most, four backs, who are all positioned behind the line of scrimmage, and the two exterior linemen, normally called ends, positioned on the line of scrimmage.
There are conditions involved at times, especially involving the quarterback, but these are all the possible eligible receivers. Interior linemen are never eligible receivers.

there is a thing called tackle eligible, when a tackle lines up as a tight end and catches the ball, Anthony Munoz used to do that, he had 5 tds over his career, but if he is only a o-tackle then no, only tight ends, and backs. he can lateral the ball to linemen.

QBs and kickers can also catch the ball. Brett Favre first pass was to himself (actually ball hit his own lineman and bounce back to him).

Eligible receivers include wide receivers, tight ends, and running backs. Linemen cannot legally touch the football unless another player - offense or defense - touches it first.
