Probability is the mathematics of calculating how likely it is that some particular event happens.

For example, if I flip a (fair) coin, there are two possibilities: heads or tails. If I flip the coin, the probability that I get heads is 1/2, or 50%. The probability that I get tails is also 1/2, or 50%. However, if I roll a 6-sided die, the probability of rolling a four is 1/6, or 16.67%.

You can see how this works by building a table of possible outcomes. Say you have 2 coins that you flip. The table would look like this.

Heads-Heads
Tails-Tails
Heads-Tails
Tails-Heads

There are 4 possible outcomes. Heads comes up in 3 of the 4 possible outcomes and therefore the probability of getting Heads is 3/4 or 75%.

This should not be confused with odds which is calculated differently.
