My friend is in LA, the classic waitor/actor. He does Central Casting a few times a week; nonspeaking roles. He wants to do more, so would it be worth the money to get an agent?
(In other words, do agents that work for undiscovered people just take your money or do they actually work for you?)

The right agent yes. One that isn't going to promise you the moon and then take all your cash. One who is interested in finding the next big thing, not the next paycheck (for them not you.)

There are plenty of schemers out there and that is only because it is one of the few industries where having contacts and agents is ALMOST a requirement. Note I say almost. Some people can do alone. Most will struggle.

Shop around. If the agent is worth anything at all, you will not have to pay a cent to actually join their books. If you get work, then they take a percentage of that. Anyone who insists on up-front payments should be moved to the bottom of your list.

Don't fall for the lines they will try to sell you. They all use them. However, the more elaborate the lines, the more their motivation is towards your back pocket and not your future. I prefer the agent who honestly says, it ain't easy ya know and I can't promise you anything. That sounds like someone who actually works in the industry, not at its edges.

Most directors and Hollywood execs will not even look at an actor without an agent. Besides, a good agent has connections and has the ability to get you in the door to good auditions. Also, make sure that you become a member of the Screen Actors Guild (SAG). Most Hollywood film companies will not even let you say a line in a movie, unless you are a member.

Hi,

You never give money to an agent up front. He/she gets paid ONLY after you book a job.

To know what you're getting yourself into as an actor, to see what you will need to do to get off to a successful start and to avoid the pitfalls that many young actors create for themselves AND to answer this very same question that comes up at least 2-3 times a day, I have created a free 28-page ebooklet that you can download on my site. It's called: What It Takes To Become An Actor. Just go to http://www.actingcareerstartup... , sign in and you can download it for free.

Here's an additional resource: http://www.actingcareerstartup.com/how_to_get_an_agent.html on how to get an agent.

Hope that helps!

in the experience that your in elementary terms concern is airfare, i does not hire a shuttle agent. you may't truly get extra much cheap fares from one. airways not supply an agent a cost, so which you should pay her, plus they don't have get right of entry to to lots extra effective info than you have. Use your smarts on the internet. keep an eye fixed on fares - and undergo in suggestions that discounting does not happen this a procedures out (for June 2009). That suggested, airfares are in elementary terms going up, as a results of fee of fossil fuels. it would be unrealistic to think of that there heavily isn't a huge bounce in airfare costs interior the subsequent year.

My mom always told me if it was meant to be an agent will come find you. Now that doesn't mean just sit on your butt and wait for something to happen. Just make sure you are in a lot of plays and go on auditions you find through the newspaper. Agents tend to go to that type of stuff. lol. Ohhh and get into alot of local stuff that everyone knows about.

omg my cousin spent so much money doing this!!!, be very careful, may a little more if you must and go to a reputible agent that has made not only one but a couple of people famous. There are sneaky scam artists that take your money and send you to stupid castings that are fake or that you could have found on your own. VERY CAREFUL make sure you find out who they made and there portfolio and that they are legit. If you wana do it do it right.

Never, EVER pay an agent!!! These are scams. An agent gets 10% of the money for jobs he gets you. If your friend is good enough, he'll find an agent eventually.

they dont take your money..they only take a % of the money you make from the work they find you. so theres no losing when you get an agent.. Search for SAG franchised agents. Be sure he builds his resume enough so the agents would be interested for him to come in and perform a monologue

It depends on the integrity of the agent. I would advise your friend to ask around. Agents know the ins and outs, and often know where and when unpublicized try outs are. If your friend can find and afford a good agent, it would certainly help his career.
