i just love the people on here who act as if you are asking if it's ok to let your baby watch 16 hours of cartoons a day. what judgemental jerks! my little boy is 4 months old and loves cartoons. i let him watch them when i have to take a quick shower or complete some kind of chore. it keeps him happy and entertained for 15 or 20 minutes. i don't think that there is anything wrong with that! babies love the sounds, music and colors in cartoons.

Kids also need to learn to entertain him or her self, find his or her own interest and talents,a nd have the tenacity and endurance to develop them. TV is a brain pacifier. Have you meet a successful teenager or adult who spends copious amounts of time watching the TV? Did TV ever teach you trigonometry, chemistry, physics or calculus in any way meaning full? Why don't you keep making cable companies rich by paying them to entertain your kids so you don't have to spend time raising them. We should all plop our kids down in front of the TV because when some crisis occurs and we need someone who can think and figure stuff our, we'll hire someone from China or India to do it and we'll all expect to make $22.00 per hour selling fashionable clothes to each other. Why don't you place a few age appropriate toys in front of your child and let him or her develop some motor skills and get to know the world around her,

Babies really don't need to watch TV at all. Even though there are a lot of movies/cartoons marketed as educational baby shows, there are countless studies that prove even "educational" television is unhealthy for children under the age of three.
In fact, the American Academy of Pediatrics released a study a couple years back concluding that babies and toddlers who watch a large amount of television are more likely to develop ADHD by the age of 7. Here's the most interesting part, every hour of TV a toddler (1-3) watched in a day increased their likely hood of developing ADHD by 10% So a 18 month old who watches 2 hours of tv a day is 20% more likely to develop ADHD by age 7 than a toddler who never watched television! http://www.whitedot.org/issue/iss_story.asp?slug=ADHD%20Toddlers (link to the study if you want to see more)
Personally, we did away with TV in our house when our oldest son was born. Once our children are in school, are physically active and have developed good study habits, we will allow them the option of one hour of (age appropriate) TV a day.
I put a couple links down below to some more information on babies/toddlers and TV viewing. This one is particularly interesting: http://www.slate.com/id/2151538/

while reading a written publication, you're stimulating the human brain. You make your reading and literacy skills and also you in the process, become more literate. Even with today's modern tools, you nevertheless still need to be able to read.
While watching t.v. can be good fun, it isn't doing anything to the human brain.

babies will watch anything they can see. so the moment you put them in front of it and they notice it. but as far as actually understanding that somethings going on and it's not just a box with people moving around inside, ummmm...really all depends on the baby.

it depends on the child, and it depends on how long you are talking about. for a half hour show, probably around 18-124 months. my last child was fascinated with the tv screen at the age of 6 months. she would watch for about 15 minutes.
