Breast milk does not come in until about 3 days after giving birth. This does vary from mom to mom and can be perfectly normal to not have milk until 5-7 days after giving birth. Your body begins to produce a nutrient rich pre-milk with important antibodies called colostrum during your pregnancy which your baby will drink until your milk does come in. Some women do begin to leak colostrum while still pregnant and others do not, both is normal. I suggest that you take advantage of the breast feeding classes and the lactation consultant in the hospital after the birth of your baby. It is not uncommon for breast feeding to be difficult at first, especially with a first baby. It takes time and practice for both mom and baby to get the hang of breast feeding.

No more bottles- breast only. The problem is that when given a bottle, the bottle releases the milk quickly without the work. He has to work to pull the milk from a breast and will get frustrated because it IS work. Only give the breast. Check your latch- make sure that baby has most of the areola in his mouth, that his mouth is curved around the areola and his tongue is too. His lip should be curled downwards sort of cradling the nipple and aerola. Use warm water- and warm your breasts before nursing- it will help to achieve let-down faster. Seek the help of a lactation consulatant- the hospital where you gave birth can help as can a nurse or doctor at your OB/Gyn's office. Eat oatmeal- it is not scientifically proven but it does help to increase your milk supply. You can try to pump as well, but if it is colostrum, that is thick and will not come out. Pumping will stimulate milk- but the baby is 100% better. I hope these things work. Patience is key. Good luck!

The process of labor and birth releases hormones that cause milk production... it is completely normal not to have milk until a couple days after your baby's birth. The first few days your body will produce colostrum, a nutrient rich pre-milk that helps boost the baby's immune system. Your milk will come in after 2-5 days, at which point you will probably produce more than you know what to do with for a few days! Don't worry at all... your body knows what it's doing!!! Good luck, and good for you for choosing to breastfeed and give your baby the best possible start!

Very normal, you dont get your milk in until after you give birth and it can take up to 4 days for that to happen, after birth you will produce a thin substance called colestrum that will be fine for the baby to survive off of until your milk come in.
You'll know it has come in by the heavy and achy feeling that you can get. Your breast will definitely look fuller the day your milk comes in

Your milk won't come in until about 2 - 3 days after you have had the baby. You will have the first milk there now which is called colustrum which is really thick and an off-white colour but usually women aren't able to tell. No need to worry, good luck with everything :)

I wouldn't expect milk yet. The first thing you'll get is colostrum. I started noticing it when I was pregnant, about 8 or 9 months, try squeezing the nipple. You generally get your true milk in about 3 days after the baby is born. Until then , they get all the nutrients they need from the clear fluid called colostrum.
