Speaking as a former nerd in high school (I'm 36 now), I definitely felt more alone in a crowd. When you're surrounded by people but not WITH anyone, it just drives the loneliness home all the more.

both. alone means you are not around others, so if im not around others, you would feel alone of course. but also surrounded by others too, because you have to be a certain way, and if you are not accepted, even in a crowd, you get the sense of loneliness. also, when my friends promise to call or hang out and they dont i dont like that and feel alone because i feel like they have found something more important and put that over making a commitment to socialize.

It depends who the others are. The most alone i have ever been is in a room full of mirrors. Something about being surrounded by idiots made me fell soo alone. If you want the solution to loneliness watch this.. .
It always helps me.

Of course, when I'm by myself, I'm literally alone--& I enjoy that. I'm not often "surrounded" by others, although in groups, I don't feel alone, because there's always someone interesting to talk with. I wouldn't go to any gathering where I knew I'd have nothing in common with ANYONE. But even that would be rare--I'm 34 & I can relate to teens, & seniors, too. I LIKE people. I can't recall ever having felt alone with people. But I do like my alone time.

Being surrounded by others always makes you more alone than you are. The degree of isolation increases with the amount of others around you.

I am more alone when surrounded by others. I prefer to be alone and with my own thoughts and not be around others projecting their thoughts on me

I feel the LEAST lonely when I am alone with myself just thinking or doing something that I enjoy. Or with one or two people who know me very well. I've never really enjoyed large groups. I actually feel more alone when I am in a crowded room, yet not actually with anyone. Or if I am around a bunch of people, but just don't "fit in" with them.

Surrounded by others. I think it's because unless we are personally a mob, herd, or flock, animal by nature, content to swim with the crowd, we intuitively feel we have to keep an eye on all around us to stay safe. And that takes separation.

I am never really surrounded by others and am usually alone and by myself....so yeah. It does get lonely...but you know...I have my way around things.
I cheer people up-the optimist I am and you know...just do one act of random kindness at a time.
