Toshiba and Dell are ok. Dell's when you start adding up the optional parts seem to become more expensive. Some people will buy an extra battery just in case their PC lasts longer then the availability of the spare parts. I would suggest a Toshiba laptop since their build quality is good and their screens are alright. Try a model that has a reasonable sized hard disc drive and upgrade to 2gb Ram if you can. Most laptops are Vista so as much ram would help. You probably want no larger than 15.4 inch screen and smaller would be better although it adds to the cost.

The toshiba's I've seen are a little more "dressed up" than dells. That is, they seem to have more features for the same price as the dells. I talked to a best buy employee one time who told me that toshiba's are returned less than any other computer they sell. As for Dells, some are good and some seem to lag a bit in speed. I think Dells do seem to have long lasting parts, but their actual speed seems to be a gamble. If you have the money and don't need to use windows only software, consider buying a macbook.

If its for school, either will be fine. Both are reliable companies with a reputable history. Since this will be used primarily for school, you don't need to go overboard on the ram, graphics card, or processor. Make sure you get a large enough hard drive for your school work. I recommend purchasing a laptop with two internal hd's. This has saved my behind as I use the second hd as a backup for all of my work. Also, you will save the most money ordering directly from the manufacturer. Although I am an HP advocate, ordering directly from the HP website saved me a ton of money. There is no middle man, they ship for free, plus you get a student discount. I hope this helps! Good luck on your purchase and I hope you do well in school! http://www.fizzolabz.com
