To be brutally honest and not worry about being PC, the first thing that comes to my mind when I hear someone say god is.... crutch, imaginary, illusion, delusion, fabrication, fantasy.
It also begs the question, which god? Humans have created over 3,000. (See http://www.godchecker.com ). It's not that God created man in his image, but rather man created gods in our image. That is why "God" is so well, human - he's a jealous god, he's an angry god, he's an insecure god, he's a spiteful god, he's a murderous god.
Logically, it makes perfect sense. What is more likely that God (a perfect being) ceated man (an imperfect creature)? Or, that man - being imperfect in his attempt to create a perfect creature (god), came up with something that well - i all too human?
Many Americans assume the term "god" = their deity named unimaginatively enough "God", but man's imagination for make-believe has created thousands of these larger-than-life parental figures of worship.
Your question also brings to mind - rightly or wrongly - thoughts regarding the person making the claim, i.e. what do I think of a "believer":
Childlike, overtrusting, simple, well-intentioned, naive, credulous, unskeptical, unsophisticated, wide-eyed, uncritical, unquestioning, unsuspicious, unwary, inexperienced, gullible, arrogant, judgmental, holier-than-thou, righteous, smug, hypocritical, sanctimonious, self-satisfied, inflexible, stubborn, obstinate, intractable, close-minded, dogmatic, narrow-minded, prejudiced, unprogressive, backward, opinionated, overbearing, domineering, devoted, fanatical, extreme, parochial, petty. Happy, joyful, blessed, innocent, well-meaning.

To me, gods are a popular myth which has caused untold suffering and strife in the world, and which to this day retards human progress by severely stunting rational thought.
And I say gods instead of god or God because invariably when I hear someone speak of god, they're talking about THEIR god. Beliefs in gods are like snowflakes--from a distance they all look alike, but upon closer inspection you find that each one is unique. No two believers believe in exactly the same god, even if they believe in only one "real" god.
I don't necessarily think less of a person who believes in a god, but I do think more of those whose minds are free enough that they no longer need to believe in such mythos.
