A programmable thermostat is both affordable ( I got mine for about $35) and can save you a lot on heating costs. Plus, you can find one with the energy star label and earn money back for your purchase. That way you know are also doing good for the environment. I have done this myself and saved money!

first you need to ask yourself some questions. Is there someone home all day. If there is then there is no need to buy a programmable stat. If you all go to work or school in the morning and return in the evening then yes a programmable stat is advisable.
I bought a programmable stat and find that with my parents home all day and someone home in the evenings it was a waste of money because we just use it manually. Before you go to the extra expense determine your needs. Only buy a programmable stat is there is nobody home for periods of hours so that the stat can start and shut off on its on otherwise stick to a manual and save yourself some money.

It all depends on how lazy you are
If you go manual you have more control over when you want heating and what temperature you want and as long as you do not mind setting what you want every day this will be most efficient.
The problem with programmable is that most people program them once then never adjust the settings often because they are too lazy to relearn how to change the program so have the heater on when it is not really needed

I would venture to say that programmable is the way to go. The buyback on the extra few bucks up front will be pretty quick if you utilize its programming. You will be able to save a lot in energy costs if you program it run only when you are home and to shut off when you are not in need of it when you are at work.

If you get a programmable, you can save money because you can make it go warmer when you are not there, but cool off before you get home. Also, it can remind you to change the filter. With some models you can change the temps for the week days or weekends.

You can use either but programmable will save you moeny on the longrun, because to can set it to decrease heat or amount of air conditioning in the home during periods when no one is normally at home. You can always hit manual override in case you schedule changes or your mood changes.

Either will work, but the programmable will save you money over time. Especially if you tend to forget to turn it up or down when you're not home.

Go with a programable and you can set it to keep a steady temp... Arrange it up/down when you are sleeping ... It's an energy saving feature as well....

programmable is better due to the fact that you could set it and save energy, usually around 78 degrees.
