I think a lot has to do with text messaging, so you cannot tell if it is truly misspelled or abbreviated to death.
As, to rise to partial defense, that spell checker doesn't always work

As I stated in a previous answer, school attendance is mandatory in the US, and English is a required subject.
So, unless one has a learning disability, there is no excuse.
Maybe it comes down to peer pressure, that is, not speaking/writing proper English as ones friends/family will look down on one. I wish I knew the answer.
P.S. I was an English major in college and I still reference and use spell check.
What's up with "A Military Veteran."
Is this a copy and paste answer session?

I agree completely. Some people think spelling is only for school. They'll have fun in the real world.
And there is no 'a' in "definitely." Probably the most often misspelled English word of all time.

Seriously, how is it that so many people in this community cannot spell or use English properly?
Clicking through some of the questions here, I noticed that a lot of people neither spell, nor use words correctly.
There is a difference between "your" and "you're".
What happened to the study of the English language in schools?

Slang for one thing. We use way to much of it and then you have people who speak with accents, not only from other country, but from different parts of the country. Lets face it most of the English language is not spelled the way it sounds and as we will never meet face to face who cares?

I agree with you as far as the grammar is concerned. Unfortunately that is the state of our education system today. It's called "Social Promotion" students advance and graduate whether they have learned or not. As far as spelling I have to admit that I am also guilty at times. It is not because I do not know how to spell. In my case it is because so many of the question elicit such emotions in me that in my rush to type a response I type too fast and neglect to proofread before submitting.

Ha ha. Thank you, and well put. Not only is there a spell check but with most computers it will underline each misspelled word in red, and none of that I'm colorblind BS.

Not many care anymore. Not many have any pride. Not many want to learn how to talk or write properly. Not many want to put forth any effort. Not many believe that anything worth doing is worth doing well. The whole world is going to Hell in a hand-basket and not many care. It is sad.

I hear you, some of the questions are impossible to decipher-I give up trying. We live in the text messaging age and no one wants to type a real sentence anymore.

Even if you don't consider those for whom English isn't their first language...it is atrocious!
Everyone should learn to use spell check as well as Google.
