Absolutely. If he misses over the amount of vacation/personal time off days allowed by the company, if it interferes with his ability to do his job or affects the smooth operation of the business, he can be fired for just cause and will not be able to collect unemployment.
Most states are "at will" employment and unless a person has a contract, the can be fired for any reason, or no reason at all, unless it can be proven that it is for an EEOC protected discrimination reason (race, sex, sexual orientation, national origin, etc.and the company employes over 15 people.)

Yes, definitely he can be fired for missing work. If he doesn't have the vacation or personal time on the books, then he needs to get his attorney, who works for him, to do things around his work whenever possible. He needs to be upfront with his supervisor as to what's going on and let him know that once he has his children, he already has childcare provided for, so this is a short term hardship that he's going through and that he is dedicated to his job and wants to do whatever he can to keep his job and provide for the welfare of his children.

Ditto "bsharp..." This is still, somewhat, a free country. You can get fired for ANY reason. In-fact, NO reason is required. I fire all my employees at least every year...I like the sound of the phrase made famous by Trump..."You're fired!"
