I am running (unfortunately) Windows Vista on my new laptop and *purposely* have my firewall turned "off". However, every time I boot the machine up, this little annoying-as-hell alert comes up in the right side of the taskbar...as if I didn't KNOW my firewall was turned off and it says "Please check your security settings" or something towards that line. How do I turn this off so that when I boot the machine up it doesn't do this?

1) Open Control Panel.

2) Select "Add or remove user accounts" under the "User Accounts and Family Safety" option.

3) Click the "Go to the main User Accounts" page link near the bottom of the new window.

4) Click the "Turn User Account Control on or off" button.

5) Disable the "Use User Account Control (UAC) to help protect your computer" option.

6) Hit OK and reboot.

Simple as that!

well... I'm sure you don't want to hear it, but you should always run a firewall... even if it is just the limited one that comes with Windows... but, when that little box pops up annoying you it gives you the option to "click here for more info" or something to that effect... when the Security Center loads up you can tell it that you have a firewall installed that you will monitor yourself... that will make it leave you alone

an easy way would be to just turn the firewall back on. how come you turned it off in the first place? is it affecting something that you're trying to do on the computer? cause if not, it's easier to just have it turned on. you have to modify the registry to make that popup go away...
