I've never been to Seattle, so I don't know what the audience is like there. I do know that every symphony audience is different. In some cities, suits and ties are standard for men, and nice dresses or suits are standard for women. Other cities tend to be more informal, with a mix of business, business casual, and casual attire. (NOTE: Symphony audience members usually only dress in tuxes and evening gowns when it's a "gala night" for major donors, or some other very special occasion... though occasionally, in the spring, you'll see some prom attire.)
No one will "mind" if you come dressed in jeans and t-shirts... but since you don't know what everyone else will be wearing, I would suggest a dress shirt, slacks and tie for your husband, and business attire (i.e., nice pantsuit or ordinary dress) for yourself. That way, you're sure to fit in, no matter what the level of attire.
I found it humorous (though understandable!) that the most vociferous advocates of "casual dress" were orchestra members. I don't blame them. They have to put on that "penguin suit" 100+ times a season. But some recent surveys of audience members I've seen seem to indicate that a lot of people like to have a special occasion to "dress up and go out" now and then. I'm not surprised. How many such occasions do we have these days, in this relentlessly casual world? Just a thought...

I agree with the "penguin" above and have been the penguin as well. I've not been a penguin as often as my esteemed colleague however. I'm a classical guitarist and we tend to dress more moderne than other classical musicians when performing solo.
Do wear what you feel like wearing. However, you may feel out of place if you're in jeans or a mini skirt. It's a more conservatively dressed crowd.
On the other hand it's summer and if they're playing at an outdoor amphitheater then a lot of people will wear jeans.
As far as I'm concerned as a performer, I take no notice at all of what people in the audience are wearing. I really only care that they come.

Any time I go to a nice event like that I just wear slacks with a shirt that has no print (like Levi's or something on it).
You don't have to go all out, just dress nicely.
I played Carmina Burana in Wind Symphony and it is AWESOME!! I hope you have a blast!

To events like this, most anything is usually acceptable. However, if you do decide to dress casually, I don't recommend ripped jeans, t-shirts, sweats, etc. You can still be comfortable and look nice. Like, a nice pair of jeans with a semi-dressy top can still be comfortable and appropriate.
I think you will probably be surprised at the diversity of outfits at these types of events. I went to the Metropolitan Opera earlier this year, and apparel ranged anywhere from jeans to formal dresses/texedos. So, I recommend dressing comfortably but nicely. You want to show that you respect the arts, after all.
Have fun!!!!

Please, I'm going to plead with you -- I have been the performing penguin on many an occasion similar to which you might have attended -- dress as you feel comfortable in and fits your mood. *You* are paying our wages, not the other way round. You want to wear casual, as you say? Then that's what you do. This 'to the symphony' gladrags nonsense has got to stop as some kind of peer pressure. Please have the courage to be yourself. It's *your* event for which *your* money is being spent to make *your* day. I wear 'penguin' on stage because I agree that its austerity takes me out of the picture to the benefit of the focus of what is being heard. Nuffing else. B*gg*r what the "notables & toffs" get up to... :-)
Have a wonderful night at your concert feeling top of the world in what you choose.

Sunday's best is ok...but it all depends what you feel. Personally, I try to remain as comfortable as i can, i wear bluejeans and a button up shirt. And to tell you the truth, nobody cares what you wear. I've seen directors from other symphonies show up to a concert in bluejeans as well.
So my answer is clear, wear whatever you feel comfortable in. Sunday's best or not, you're not trying to impress anybody.

Your husband should wear a coat and tie and you should wear something that would be semi-formal. Tuxedoes are not necessary and neither are evening gowns, but something nice.
