It's a divination tool used to bring spirits out so you can communicate with them. When you're a certain age the more people tell you not to do something the more you're going to want to do them.
So, by popular demand (more or less) here are Auntie Z's Ouija-hints:
** be respectful. A spirit that gets irritated can be just that
** Don't give it your name. In case it decides it doesn't like you it can be more difficult to deal with if it has your name. If it tells you its name bear in mind there's a good chance it's fibbing.
** Thank them when you're done and ask them to return to where they came from. It's a version of "you don't have to go home, but you can't stay here".
Have fun!

I watched a discovery channel episode on this last week. This couple bought a house and were being haunted so they used a Ouija board it got worse. Then they decided to contact a priest. The priest said they messed up by using the board because before the demons couldn't really get into the house, they just hung around it. The Ouija board acts like a portal to let spirits into where the board is located. The couple further messed up by burning the board when the demons scared them while they were using it. According to the priest, this destroyed the portal while leaving the demon behind. The house had to be exorcised. I'm sure there is more to the Oiuja board than that, buts thats what I gleaned from the episode.

With the right intention, the boards open a portal between this world and the spirit world. Unfortunately, if you don't know what you're doing--and sometimes even if you do--you can get bad spirits coming through. And the thing with bad spirits is that some of them are tricksters--you don't always know they're bad until they're fully entrenched in your life. I get a very clear "don't mess with it" vibe. The things creep me out.

The people taking part push the glass or marker around. That is how it works. It is a party trick with no spiritual influence at all.

i dont think so.
No self respecting well meaning spirit would bother w/ that ouija crap. Not that i nessarily beleive it, but many renowned psychics say not to mess w/ them. Sceptic as i am, im not taking chances.

Letters spell out words. Words strung together make sentences. It's called language.
