Basketball is a sport that is played all over the world; but is dominated by African-Americans in the NBA and college ball. So "no" basketball is not a black sport. It would seem so in the United States because some of its players are flashy and bling blingy. However; some of the best players in the NBA are white...like Dirk and Nash and other potentially great overseas players...oh yeah...and the last great american white hope Larry Bird.

In the hood (and that's not to say that all players are from the hood) pretty much all black youth have for recreation is the hoop....and that hoop can be anything...a metal wire, a box crate, a palsy net...anything nailed to a higher surface. With that being said basketball is the only sport that is perpetually promoted in urban neighborhoods of blight and despair. It is also one of the few sports (due to poor education and lack of exposure) that urban kids see as an opportunity to become financially wealthy. If you haven't done so already you should check out the movie "Hoop Dreams." Fewer than 1% make it out of the hood to go on to become NBA stars.

Every other childhood sport needs the committment of time and financial support for specialized equipment, and uniforms such as baseball, football, lacrosse, hockey, gymnastics, pool facilities....

It all boils down to economics, class, and exposure. And if you live in the hood your exposure leaves a lot to be desired.

Damn people are so stereotypical these days. Me as a black person i am laughing right now because people can be so racial when it it comes to sports, crime, and the family conditions of ethnics. First of all basketball is not a black sport because if it was then a black person would have invented it dammit. Second of all it is something for us young black males of today's world to do instead of killing one another over stupid s*** like stepping on each others shoes, or selling drugs on the street. I hope that this little message I wrote on here explains the difference between this so called " black " sport and sports in general. now hold up, why would anyone say that, is it because mostly all the black players are better, i mean let's face it u have kobe, dwyane wade, lebron,and more, the sport is not for black people, and why would they called it national basketball in the first place, how dumb can someone be, lots of white players are famous in the nba even thought they are international players such as steve nash, dirk, ginobli,and more..., i don't know why would someone bring that question up, larry bird is white he made a legendary name in the nba, jerry west,and more, the person who ask this ques, got a brain of an 2 years old child, jesus chris this guy stupid.

no, not at all. black are just, for some reason good at it. im a 15 yr old white girl, and im a long time b ball player who has true skills, and can even dunk. there is no such thing as a 'black sport'

most of the good players are black because black people have more muscle explosion to do those jumps and stuff
also it is a very popular sport with Afro-Americans so it's natural that they practice a lot and get to play better

no , anybody of any color can play. at one time blacks were not allowed to play with white players ,but thank GOD that has changed, the sport is a whole lot better for it. just like Ashe and the Williams sisters made tennis better,tiger made golf better. i could go on. this is not to say whites don't make it better.but when the culture lets everyone in it just makes things better.

Pretty much. More blacks are taller. I think they should raise the rim a couple of feet so white guys can play again.
