It is believed that they can. Dogs have the same pain receptors that humans do. We know they feel pain, and can suffer terribly. What is misunderstood is how dogs (and other animals) may respond to pain. Instinctually, they will try to hide the fact that they are hurting, because it is a sign of weakness. Just because your dog is not acting painful after undergoing or experiencing a pain-causing event, does not mean he isn't in pain. If your vet does not prescribe pain medication for your dog (or other pet) after it has gone through surgery or other painful procedure, then find another vet!
