I missed class today and need someone to help me by explaining how to solve a rational formula for a given letter. For example my book shows a problem like this one:

y-b/m=x for : y

note: the / symbol is what I used to make it a fraction since I can't draw on this thing. Anyhow if anyone has some tricks on how to solve things like this it would help since the book only has three example with the same problem (which doesn't help at all!)

THANK YOU!

(y-b)/m=x
Multiply both sides by m,
y-b = mx
Add b to both sides,
y = mx + b

Do you mean (y-b)/m or y - (b/m). Anyway, I will just explain it just for an example. I will use y - (b/m).

Since you only want y on the left, you want to get rid of the rest of the terms by canceling out. So to get ride of -b/m , you do +b/m, but if you make changes on the left of the equation, you have to do the same on the right.

y - b/m + b/m = x + b/m

y = x + b/m

Another example, just in case if you wanna see...

y/2 + b - m = x
y/2 + b - m + m = x + m (Get rid of m)
y/2 + b = x + m
y/2 + b - b = x + m - b (Get rid of b)
y/2 = x + m - b
(y/2) * 2 = (x + m - b) * 2 (Get rid of the denominator 2)
y = 2x + 2m - 2b

Hope this can help you understand.

Well the answer would be y=x+b/m

You have to get everything else out of the equation besides what you are looking for. In this case it's pretty easy. The -b/m is on the y side and we don't want that. So to get it on the other side, we simply add it to the other so it cancels out. If it was y/x=m... then you would multiply by x since that's what you do to get the y by itself. If you have any questions just e-mail me. I hope I helped!

Or maybe I'm wrong from these answers...

you move everything to the other side to leave y by itself for example if you have 2y+3x=5 then first you subtract 3x from both sides to get 2y=5-3x then you divide by 2 to both sides and you will get y=(5/2)-(3x/2)

So:
(y - b)/m = x

Multiply both sides by m:

y - b = mx

Add b to both sides:

y = mx + b

There you go...

Reading question as:-
(y - b) / m = x
y - b = m x
y = m x + b
