It makes this "tsshhhhhhh" sound for like 3 seconds, about once every hour.

Additional detail: it also has a barely detectable trickling all the time. I think it's trying to refill itself maybe?

Other than that, it works perfectly fine. No leaks or anything. Do I tighten some valve or something to get it to stop, or is this normal?

Although I agree that the flapper is the culprit, you can prove it yourself. Take the tank lid off, and put a few drops of food coloring in the tank, and let it settle. Don't flush the toilet! Come back in 10 minutes, and if there is food coloring in the bowl, the flapper is bad. It is a $5 fix. For the guy who charges $225 to change the guts out, QUIT TAKING ADVANTAGE OF PEOPLE! I can change the whole toilet out, for that kind of money! Anyway, from your description, the flapper is all that needs to be changed. Good luck!

It sounds like you have a small leak at the rubber flapper which lets the water drain into the bowl when flushed. That's the trickling sound. When enough water leaks out of the supply tank, the float drops enough to open the supply valve and re-fill it. That's the "tsshhhhhhh" sound. Carefully check to see that the flapper is sealing properly against the seat. That part is cheap and replacement is easy so don't hesitate to replace it if it looks questionable.

Your toilet is losing water. The toilet tank is filled by the fill valve(the part on the left when you take off the tank lid) . It shuts off when the float or ball rises to the top..The part in the middle (flush valve) is where your losing water, its most likely the flapper that's connected to the flush valve, that's the part that pops up when you flush it. When you lose water through the flapper, the float on the fill valve lowers and it turns back on, but only shortly, just enough to fill the tank back up. The trickling is the water constantly flowing, from the tank, to the bowl, down the sewer. I recommend having all the parts changed, fill valve, flush valve, tank to bowl bolts and gaskets. if you want a quick fix turn off the water to the toilet, there should be a valve on the left bottom of the toilet. Take out the flapper, bring it to your local plumping supply store and match it up.....But I recommend replacing all the parts. fill valve, flush valve, and if you have a two piece toilet the tank to bowl bolts and gaskets. i recommend that cause you might still lose water after you change the flapper. I usually charge between $225 and $250 depending on the toilet. i would call your local plumber, they might tell you to get a new toilet, but tell them just the parts. Email me....

it truly is the leak. With the lid off, seem interior the tank, now flush and watch what happens. you will see a "flapper"valve elevate and the water pass down a huge hollow. as quickly as the water is in basic terms about long gone the flapper falls over the hollow back last it up, allowing the tank to fill up. Flush back and this time grab the flapper alongside with your hand and with the pointer finger of the different hand sense the touch floor of the flap to make constructive there is not any grunge there. additionally mutually as keeping the flap up, run your finger around the outlet that the flapper covers to wipe off any grunge or slime. Now drop the flapper and permit it to fill up and notice if it is going to close up. in case you spotted that the flapper rubber is torn or cracked, have been given to interchange with yet another flap from Walmart or someplace like that. This sucker is think to hold the water completely.

Check your flapper. It may be wore out and need replacing. I hope I'm right, because I'm a apprenticing plumber. Replace the flapper and the trickling sound should go away and the ballcock should stop kicking on and refling the tank.

your toilet is leaking past the flapper. No replacement is necessary. just put a little petroleum jelly where the flapper seals to the tank and that should to the trick.
