I am looking for a book, reading level between adult and young adult, that is at least 225 pages. It needs to be about a character that is striving for a goal. Throughout the plot that character has to go through several challenges and overcome obstacles to get to that goal, and finally reaches it in the end. A character in strive of their passion...
I would prefer a book more up to date...

"The Power of One" by Bryce Courtenay.
I read it in 11th grade (along with my entire all-girls school). This was probably the one and only book that was in the school's syllabus that everyone LOVED.
Written in the 1st person; It's about a white boy living in South Africa in the 30's, who goes through unbelievable cruelty, but through a chance meeting on a train, decides that he will strive to become the welterweight champion fo the world. I believe you can read the first chapter on amazon.com.... you can decide for yourself whther or not it's up to date enough for you.
