Clothing fibers have the potential to run when wet. So mixing a load in the dryer is not a good idea since they are wet when you put them in. Cotton fibers are the most likey to bleed or run on other fabric. Polyester is the least likely.
Then there is the lint factor , the tumbling produces lint from the clothing , so if items are not similar in color and one produces alot of lint... it does get on all the articles in the dryer.
If things are really tight money wise .... clothing that has been washed many many times has very little dye yet to release, and will not produce much lint. Towels seem to never stop producing lint.
Note " always be wary of red 100Percent cotton... for some reason this never stops giving color up.

I'm a struggling college student too and I only dry my old tshirts, pj pants, and jeans with my whites. Everything else (stuff that I consider my "nicer" clothes that I don't want to shrink or get worn out in the dryer) I airdry in my apartment. The reason why I do it is because if I had the money, I'd dry the nicer stuff separate and really low heat but it's not worth it to have to dry a separate load when I can just airdry it. But the dryers at my apt are huge! I usually dry 3 loads at once with the heat set medium/high. So, that's what I recommend.

I do not dry cloors with whites. But, I am not a struggling college student either. If I were, I would dry them together. The only thing is if you have something white that has a lot of lint like towels I would not dry them with dark clothes because they get white lint on everything.

I dry my whites with colors and nothing bad ever happened. Just dont wash together.
My whites are always there whitest.
I only separate the thick stuff from the lighter stuff so that they dry evenly.
P.S i know what you mean with laundry being expensive - i save by saving any of my loose change at the end of the day and after a few days its enough for the washing/drying. the most goes into buying detergent.

You can only dry things together if they can be. If the tags say high, low or medium heat than that is what you dry your clothes on. It's not a matter of colors. Read your tags and dry accordingly. If you have to pay, then save up the clothes in the heat category to dry together.

NO, you will get lint on your colored clothes you are wise not to throw them together . do not second guess yourself even if you want to save a dollar, to clean lint off of color clothes will cost a mint.

you are able to bathe them interior the comparable device, yet distinctive a lot. to maintain your colours, use chilly water to cut back the bleeding. the colour will stay longer. denims are often okay to put in with whites in case you have had them a together as and characteristic washed them numerous situations - they fade and bleed for a time and then they are ok. in no way positioned crimson clothing in a white or mild load except you prefer pink undies! :-)
