Field Glass is the family or group name for a group of optical instruments to view distant objects. It can be uniocular, binocular, telescope, etc. Binocular is a member in the family of field glass.

I always understood that field glasses were two short telescopes hooked together for long range viewing. Used before, during, and shortly after the civil war.
Binoculars came into being in the mid 1800 s and were specially made with prisms installed for better magnification and clearer viewing.
I may be wrong, but that is how I always understood it.
