Well, I learned for the first time when I was about 8. Made a few chains, & stopped until the beginning of this year (over 10 years later lol).
At first, I thought I knew what I was doing...and then I realized I wasted a lot of time hahaha. Now I do know what I'm doing, & I'll try to help ya :D

*Get some pretty yarn that you like, & a hook or 2 (or a set, if you think you'll enjoy doing this). To start with, the best thing you can do to make it as easy on yourself as possible is to get some big, bulky yarn (Wal Mart has this neat stuff called "Thick & Quick" in some interesting colors), & a big hook (my biggest is an "M").
*Start small!!!! Start by making something simple, like a potholder, dishcloth, doll blanket, or scarf.
*Start simple!! Start by mastering the single crochet stitch, then double, & so on. This will make it easy for you in the future, when you try more difficult patterns & whatnot.

Three websites that have helped me a lot! :D
~ http://crochet.about.com/od/learncrochet/Learn_Crochet_From_Beginner_To_Advanced.htm
They have quite a few beginner's patterns

And ~ http://youtube.com/results?search_query=crochet&search=
If you type in "crochet" and the type of stitch you're working on, they'll bring up a list of videos that show you step-by-step how to do it. There are also a few patterns that people taped themselves doing, for your enjoyment :)

And~
http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?board=79.0
Craftster's Crochet Discussions & Questions board
Should you have any questions, ask the Craftsters!! I've never had to wait more than 10 minutes for any of my crochet emergencies to be solved!! The "completed projects" board is also a great pick-me-up when you're not feeling terribly into something you've worked hard on - everyone's very supportive there, & you might also come across newer & better info, patterns, & advice :)

Good luck!!

Yes, I know how to do it. Have been crocheting for over a year now.
You need a crochet hook, and some yarn, bare minimum supplies. Yarn needles and scissors are also helpful tools, as well as a tote bag to carry your stuff in. Stitch markers come in handy, but you can use regular safety pins for this too.
I would start out with some regular old Red Heart acrylic yarn for starters. Don't use a dark color, because it's harder to see your stitches. Also don't get a fuzzy yarn, because that's really hard to see the stitches in! Even sometimes after you're well practiced at crocheting.

For the most part, I taught myself how to crochet, and have found these sites to be quite helpful:
