Dear xblaine,
Because of your change in circumstances, are you aware that you can file a request to modify the amount of alimony you are paying? You can. You can prove that your finances have changed significantly and you certainly should do so right away. All it takes is a w-2 or a letter from your company stating the changes and the date these changes took place.
If you simply quit paying your alimony, you may be arrested, and then you will have a police record to go along with all kinds of credit issues that will have to be dealt with in order to lead any kind of normal life. You do not tell us the state in which you reside, so answers cannot be too specific. Go to an attorney. It is your fastest and most honourable path to a safer, saner existence.
Good luck, hon. Life will get better.

Are you nuts? You are thinking like a criminal. Just go back to court and get the alimony payments decreased. Don't mess with the law or your next job will be in the laundry room of some prison.

If it is court ordered then you'd better comply with the court order, the court can freeze your IRA as well as your bank account until the alimony payments have been made. You might also find yourself in jail for contempt of court.

Well if you financial situation has changed, then you will be able to file for a modification of the terms that order you to pay the said amount. to keep your assets from being frozen temporarily move them to a new location, I don't know what you have, but you'll have nothing if you run. the legal system can be fair sometimes, you really don't have many options here.

You are never not liable to paying court appointed alimony until the court appointed date has been met or the other spouse marries. Even if you choose to not have a job. You will be taken to court again since you have chosen to stop payments and you will suffer huge consequences. Get your act together and pay up until your conditions are met. You have no choice.

Ask a lawyer, with your circumstances you can certainly get the alimony drastically reduced; all you need is proof of your financial peril and reduced salary: Don't skip town, this happens to people, the judge will understand.

Chances are they will seize everything you have including any future legal wages, bank accts, tax refunds, etc. There will be a bench warrant out for you for defying a court order so the first time you get stopped for a traffic ticket, will keep you from getting a good job, place to live, waiting for the unexpected to happen but its up to you. Good luck

not sure. If my ex-husband quit paying me I would lose my mind! He is still so upset that I left him for his former best friend. He needs to get a life!
