It depends on what type of fish you have...Egg layers don't get "pregenant" except for mouthbrooding mbuna cichlids who cary their eggs in their buchal cavity (throat) in which case they appear to be pregnant except that it is a bulge in the throat instead of the abdomine.

I am otherwise assuming that you have livebearers like guppies, mollies, platties etc. in which case the females belly will be bulging and they will have a dark spot on their underside called a gravid spot. These are the common signs of pregnant livebearers.

If you have live young without having eggs in the tank, the mom would most likely have been a guppy, platy, swordtail, or molly (there are a few other fish that bear live young, but they aren't as commonly seen in pet shops).

Some signs to look for are the fish will develop a very rounded abdomen, which becomes nearly square at the back when she's about to give birth. If the fish are any color other than black, you should be able to notice two dark patches at the rear edge of the abdomen neat the bottom fin (called gravid spots because females get them when they're filling with developing fry - the spots are actually clear, but you can see the dark forms of the fry inside). The mother usually tries to find a hiding spot near the bottom of the tank, or anywhere there's cover to give birth to the young.

In a few weeks, the fry will start developing their color, so that may also help provide you with a clue.

HI. You can usually tell the fish is pregnant by her big ole' belly. Once she's had the "babies" you probably can't tell. Just a warning, though...the other fish will eat all those little fishies. You can get a Ghost tank, which sits inside your regular tank, if you feel like going through the trouble of skimming out the babies and putting them in the ghost tank until they're big enough to survive.
