No, it will work just fine.
The ONLY time a motherboard requires you to have the same Sized memory sticks installed is if you have a motherboard that supports Dual Channel and you want to utilize it.
There is NO motherboard for any non-specialized computer that REQUIRES you to match your memory these days. It is a myth that came from the old SIMM and RDRam memory modules which required ram to be installed in matched pairs.
Granted, 1.5 gigs is not going to be a HUGE improvement, but you will be able to notice a difference.
Don't forget that you can sell the 512 that was in there on ebay.

no, it isnt bad for the computer - I have a dell inspiron 6000 that supports 2 gigs of ram and I recently upgraded from 256 mb to 1 gb and it really works well now - if you are gonna use very graphically oriented programs, I wud afford 2 gigs asap so that they will work better and faster with your system - do some research but I think you will find the best value is kingston as they offer a lifetime warranty on their ram - keep an eye out also as some stores have sales on ram - make sure you get the right speed and type of ram for your laptop

No, 1 GB is not bad for a laptop. In order to run Vista Premium well you will need 2GB or RAM but 1.5 GB of RAM will work fine. DDR2 memory doesn't have to be install in pair so you're ok.

best to consult manufactures website to see if 1) it can use more then 1 gig in each socket 2) make sure the memory is the same type and speed for your computer and 3rdly install the larger memory in slot 1 reboot and check functionality run various programs then run it with both memory sticks and recheck functionality you should then be golden

well if you can only afford 1gig, then that is ok. If you are running vista, then you might want to go to www.microsoft.com/vista. There you can look at the requirements. They have a minimal requirement and a recommended requirements. I hope this helps.

it depends on the mother board you have and if it supports different size chips in each memory bank, if you only have 2 slots you will probably be fine with 2 different size sticks of ram, its the mother boards with 4 slots that most often require that the banks have an equal amount of memory.
