I think they'd be better off actually INSPECTING the meat or better yet, making sure that the factories the meat is being imported from is following safety guidelines.
This whole China is shipping us shoddy merchandise thing is ridiculous. 90% of the stuff that people in the US buy is in some way connected with China. Does that mean that everything in your house is dangerous? No.
This whole thing started because the head of the Chinese FDA was bribed by some slimy Chinese Corporate entity to allow contaminated baby formula to be sold. Then a bunch of babies died. The Chinese executed the head of the FDA yesterday.
Seeing this and realizing they could hurt their economic competition, the US started 'magically' discovering all of these Chinese products that are potentially dangerous. (As if they were completely unaware of this before. SURE.) This is blatant propagnada. That's not to say that the Chinese corps aren't making tooth paste out of antifreeze, but the fact is that this sudden emphasis on how bad Chinese products are strikes me as a bit convenient for American manufacturers.
And think of it this way - if the situation was reversed and the Chinese were accusing America of shipping them dangerous products, how quick to you think the US media would accuse the Chinese media of producing propaganda?

The FDA should be abolished. If enough people actually cared about the country of origin of their food, the government would not have to require labeling. If 1% of the population refused to by unlabeled meat, companies would label it to get their business.

Defintely! That's a mighty scarihg thing if we start getting poultry, pork, and beef from China or some other country with poor saftey standards (the FDA doesn't check these imports)--the price will still be the same, of course.
