Laptops aren't that good for gaming so a desktop would be better unless you really want the portability.
Dell would be a ripoff parts and service wise and same with Alienware or Voodoo.
A good company to consider is Carbonfrost Systems. I can speak from experience when I say they have the best warranty and service. They will literally build it to whatever you want while keeping the price low. They have computers in all price ranges so you should be able to find one.
For under 2000 look at their Defender Mark I and II. It's a beast along with a 19" widescreen monitor and awesome speakers. The total package and the video card are really good which will be in SLI mode along. But yeah the whole is awesome along with their service and parts.

Since you want a gaming/entertainment pc you need a desktop and not a laptop since most laptops will have a built-in video card which is not good for games. There are too many good desktop brands to choose from. Just don't get a desktop from an unknown brand. For just under $2000, your desktop should have 2 GB or RAM or more, a big hard drive or a pair of hard drive in a RAID array, a dedicated DirectX 10 video card, wireless, Gigabit Lan, a dvd-burner, a Sound Blaster soundcard ( not built-in) and either a Quadcore or Core 2 Duo Intel CPU.

If you are looking for really good gaming/entertainment then I suggest a desktop.
I say this primarily because if you make sure you purchase a fully upgradeable model you'll be able to keep up with technology realtively simply and with individual upgrades for a long time to come.
Laptop upgrades are usually confined to the manufacturer whose prices are usually sky high. As a quick example. I just replaced a CD ROM drive in an older laptop. The manufacturer wanted $55 for a "refurbished" drive. I bought a brand new Teac for $17. So you have to consider upgrades and the long term in your purchase unless you're willing to spend realtively big $$ every few years.

If you are looking for a nice strong entertainment package then go for desktop PC, because it can support lots of cool gadgets and can screen can vary upto more than 40 inches.
But now a day many laptop vendors also have provided a full entertainment package within, but still I suggest desktop PC for you!

Desktops are better for hard core applications such as gaming and running long programs, while laptops are better for portability and for those who need something on the go.
For you, I'd recommend a high end Windows Vista Premium desktop.

Yes get a desktop for gaming. Your getting a response from a user who has a gaming laptop. Gaming laptops dont have enough power. And when gaming it tends to slow down a lil.

well if you're looking for gaming, do NOT buy a laptop... they're not great at gaming... but if you're looking for a pre-configured PC thats good at gaming you might consider HP's VooDoo brand PCs... (www.voodoopc.com) they're generally highly rated... although HP's other systems could offer you a similar experience for cheaper... just pay close attention to options like RAM and Video Card options
it really comes down to being honest with yourself... do you NEED a $2000 gaming PC or would a $900 system work just as well assuming you're just now getting into PC gaming

You should get a laptop instead of a desktop because it's portable and convenient. I would highly recommend a Toshiba Satellite M65-S9092. I have one, and I love it.
