Depending on your email client, they may have features for delivery or read receipt. The problem is the person you're sending the email to has to have a client that uses that feature and they have to have turned it on. For example, Microsoft Outlook has a read receipt feature, but many people turn it off.

Apart from the email client, there are some third party services that can do something similar. Sometimes, they use tiny 1 pixel graphics in the email so when the recipient opens the email, a call is made to a web server to grab that element and the service records the time and date. The link below discusses one of those services.

There are lots of advantages and disadvantages to these services. My rule is to let people know if you do use one of these services. Otherwise, people may feel they are being spied on.

A real simple way is to ask whom ever you send the e-mail to to just reply back when they receive your e-mail. Works for me.

if using outlook, you can request a read receipt,
but the reader just has to say,
no receipt,
so out of luck there too.
