I am a student in a state university in southern California. I live on campus. The housing department has charged me an "optional" activity fee but they have not put on any actvities this quarter.

I want my money back.
What does California and Federal law say about getting a refund for fees that were not put to their stated use? Can use state the code and subsection?

How do you know they have not put on any activities this quarter? Activities don't have to be formal programs. They may have given it to the school for a campus-wide program. They may have used it for posters and decorations. I seriously doubt a housing department would go an entire quarter without putting on a single program. Are you a member of your floor/house government? Are you sure you know what's going on? I'd suggest you ask your RA or another staff member what they did with the money.

And to answer your question about the law, there's no such section in the California code. Maybe the UC Regents or CSU trustees have something in their by-laws, but I wouldn't count on it.

Sounds like you should get a hold of the staff of Judge Judy, I think she would rip them apart and not only get your money back but they probably pay you for being on the show.

The activities may be optional, but the fee is not. I seriously doubt you will find ANY laws that have anything to do with this situation.

Remind them that there was a similar case several years ago that went to the CA Supreme Court where the University (Berkeley?) lost.
