probably a new kind of metal for you:
kamelot(one of my top 3 fav bands), angra, blind guardian, sonata arctica.
its called power metal
if you like that, check out symphonic metal also: like rhapsody, nightwish, epica
and i hope you change your mind about death metal, because it's a really awesome subgenre of metal:
check out opeth, in flames, and children of bodom

Metallica is the standard. Some obscure stuff try Vision of Disorder they are NY hardcore at it's best. If you can find it, listen to Snot they are f*cking amazing but only one studio album due to their lead singer dying in a car crash.
