solving for x

2x - 8 = 116 add 8 to both sides of equation

2x -8(+8) = 116 (+8) simplify

2x = 124 now divide both sides by 2 which isolates your variable

2x/2 = 124/2 simplify

x = 62 --> --> --> your ANSWER

you can check it by putting the 62 back in for the x in the original equation

2(62)-8=116

124-8 = 116

116 = 116 --> both sides equal the x value is correct

this reads as: 2 multiplies an unknown (x) minus 8 equals 116
think of the equals sign as a tetertoter that has to be kept balanced. Can add 8 to both sides and will still balance.
so -8 and + 8 on left delete each other. 116 and +8 on the right add together to get 124.
now we have 2x=124
divide both sides by 2 will maintain the balance.
this gets x=62

Add 8 to both sides for:

2x = 116+8
2x = 124

divide both sides by 2:
for x = 62

Check the answer:

(2 x 62) -8 = 116
124 -8 = 116
116 = 116

Hey there!

Here's the answer.

2x-8=116 --> Write the problem.
2x=124 --> Subtract 8 on both sides of the equation.
x=62 --> Divide 2 on both sides of the equation.

Here's the check.

2(62)-8=116 -->
124-8=116 -->
116=116, true.

Since 62 satisfies the equation, the solution is x=62.

Hope it helps!

2x - 8 = 116

In an equation, both sides are equal to each other. That means whatever you do to one side of the equation, you have to do it to the other in order to keep things equal. You have to work on getting x by itself. Since you have a "- 8" on the left side, you can add 8 to both sides to get rid of it.

2x - 8 + 8 = 116 + 8
2x = 124

Now, you can divide both sides by 2 to get x by itself:

2x = 124
(2x) / 2 = 124/2
x = 62

Your answer is x = 62

take away the 116
and 8 to both sides making the 2 a 6 and the -8 an 8but that would equale 48 so i dont understand how this epuation could end up being that number i think its imposible

2x-8=116
you have to add the eight to both sides
2x-8=116
+8 +8
then you divide the two from both sides.
2x=124
_ _
2 2
then you get x=62

Ok. In general with an equation, it will still be true if you perform the same operation on each side. So:

2x-8=116
Add 8 to each side: 2x=124
Divide each side by 2: x=62

i suppose you want to find out what x is so add 8 to both sides
2x=124 and divide both sides by 2 to get
x = 62
