Yeah, I never understood that one. I guess it makes it fair for all the teams because why lose a weekend worth of revenue for the break.

Moving the event to the weekend would be convenient for west coast viewers. However the MLB would lose to much money from all of the regular season games not played on a weekend. The teams who do not sell out every game count on weekend revenue. I do not really care either way, but MLB will never change the scheduling of the all-star weekend. "If it don't make dollars it don't make sense."
