Au contraire -it may be too early!

Fall is the best time to plant grass, which in your area should mean mid-September. Why? Because there's plenty of dew in the morning, and, as the leaves fall and the rain starts -your grass gets plenty of water and sun, with no heat stress.

To answer your question -you are by no means too late.

No, go ahead. The trick is do you have enough water to keep it moist for the rest of the season? It will be a little weak going into winter, but unless you are buried in snow for 4 months or get no moisture, the lawn will probably pull through. Even a light green fuzz is better than mud.
