As a brit who is a huge nfl fan and a huge rugby fan i cant believe how 99% of people who have contributed to this argument from both sides of the atlantic are so ignorant!!!.

1. Why do most of the americans think that rugby players are slow? look up jason robinson on youtube or doug howlett and many others.
2. Many rugby fowards are around 19 stone and that is pure muscle and no fat!
3. Nfl players need the padding, hits tend to be harder.
4. However rugby players are much. much, much fitter 80 mins of rugby league vs constant start stop and change between offence and defence. No comparison.
5. And finally anybody who is bringing war into the argument are sick individuals.
6. And the argument about were are the most powerful country in the world?? what is the point? You are led by the most hated man in the World.

End off

I enjoy rugby and watch games as often as I can though the teams I like tend to be Austrailian rather then British and you should know that rugby is played here in the Colonies, though I will give you that our teams probably couldn't hold a candle to ya'lls. As an American who's proud of my British...well Scottish...roots I hardly consider ya'll cowards. The only country across the pond that blanketly fits that bill in my book are those pansy French. Now as to comparing rugby to our football, that is like comparing baseball to cricket. Similar in very superficial ways, but really 2 very different animals. I think you do underestimate the feroicty of many of the U.S. athletes who play and have played football, I'd put Jack Lambert or L.C. Greenwood in their prime or current players like Polamalu, or Ray Lewis against any British rugby player. And as far as not liking their ears chewed on, you've obviously never been on the bottom of a pile for a lost fumble...the helmet prevents said ear munching, however I've nearly lost an eye twice from gouges, had fingers broken by other players on purpose, been punched, kicked in the groin and many other things and if not for having to have my knee rebuilt twice I'd still be doing it...a scrum is a scrum no matter the sport. I also imagine not many rugby players would relish a bone crushing hit from a man like Julius Peppers who weighs close to 300 pounds...don't know how that converts to stones...and also runs as fast as a gazelle. I respect your sport and the people who play it and I wouldn't dismiss ours as powderpuff.

Ask someone who has played both why these tough Rugby players don't come and get millions of dollars to beat up the wussy Americans.

It should be easy according to you. How much does a star Rugby player get paid? An NFL star probably makes ten or a hundred times that. Why is there a lack of Rugby players cashing in?

I don't think they are too stupid. What could be the reason?

I've played both. To be honest I've been hit much harder in American football. Its the pads. You can deliver a harder hit without feeling it and it makes people think they are bulletproof. Its physics. They guy on the receiving end is going to get hurt. In rugby I was hit or hit a bit. In American football I was hit or hit every play.

I've also drank with, fought with, and fought side by side you Tommys while serving in the military. I've never met any cowards. The American who said that you were cowards isn't worth your time.

I appreciate your bravado. It is what I've come to expect of you all. Kidding aside I think you underestimate us Yanks.

First of all, you guys don't use pads cuz there's no need for it in that sport, rugby...
Back in the days when American football was first invented and played they played without pads but they soon realized that this sport isn't like rugby. Rugby you get knock out or you can break your arm..
In American Football you need pads or you can DIE..in pro football there are guys who weigh close to 300 pounds.
don't talk smack if you don't know about American football.
In rugby everyone is fairly the same weight because running is required of all players.. in American Football a 170 pound guy can be tackled by 300 pound guy.
You've obviously never played American Football. I've played both. and American football is way harder and tougher.. you wouldn't last 1 quarter in football. you'd be crying about how the helmet is giving you headache.

football players are bigger, stronger, and faster than rugby players. how many rugby players can run the 40 yard dash in less than 4.5 seconds? that's what i thought. we wear pads because rugby is a contact sport, football is a collision sport, big difference. i'd love to see a smaller, slower rugby player step accross the middle of the field with NFL linebackers lurking. they would have their heads taken off. what's this jealousy thing you brits have of our country anyway? we rescued your entire continent from the nazis in WW2 while singlehandedly kicking japans *ss at the same time. where was the help from europe in the war against japan? it wasn't there because you guys couldn't even defend your own countries, let alone help us. hitler was marching across europe like it was his personal playground until our american grandfathers stormed the beaches at normandy, turning the war in the allies favor. and yes, there were a lot of european troops in the ensuing battle of the bulge, but that battle could not have been won without huge amounts of american blood being spilled on those french beaches

If I may borrow a phrase from you, " Americans dont like to get their ears chewed" well..who in their right mind wants to?!?! So we use padding, yet the hits are still hard enough to cause concussions and broken bones; ifwe didn't have those pads we..oh I don't know, might DIE from severe internal brusing? Being tough and being crazy are two totally different things. Both of these sports offer tough physical contact, but mindless, ignorant people like you just ruin everyone's enjoyment of these respected sports.

I definatly don't think the Brits are cowards, however your arguement is unfounded. THe US version of football didn't start off with pads, they added them because of all the deaths. FDR's brother considered banning it when he was president.
