This is not a criticism, but you must be an atheist. If you don't believe that anything exists except matter, that you are your body and that when your body dies, you cease to exist; than how can you believe that life has any importance. Most people who are atheists are not smart enough to realize that.
You have an excellent mind to be able to see that. Providentially, that is not the case. God is. We are important because God created us and shares His life with us.
If you believe that there is only matter and that we are the body, please think about this; things are often not what they seem to be.
The earth seems to be flat. For centuries everyone thought that was true, even though the earth is a sphere. It seems as if the sun rotates around the earth. Everyone, including the best scientists believed that, until people knew enough astronomy and mathematics to be able to figure out that that that couldn't be the case.
It appears that you have the same skin all your life. As you get older, you get brown spots if you are caucasion, you get moles and warts, and when you get much older, your skin gets full of wrinkles.
The reality is that there is 3 layers to our skin. The outer layer dies and gets sloughed off, the middle layer becomes the outer layer, the bottom layer becomes the middle, and the cells below the skin become the bottom layer of skin.
It takes about 30 days for for all 3 layers of skin to die and be replaced by cells that weren't skin cells 30 days ago. Our bodies are made of matter, which means they are made of atoms. In 30 days, every atom that made up the physical matter of the skin part of our body, becomes non body.
Western scientists say that are bodies are continually bringing new atoms into our body when we breathe, drink, and eat. Atoms that were a part of our body, no longer are part of the body after we exhale, urinate, perspire, and deficate.
Western medical science says that in 7 years every atom that used to make up your physical body (even your bones) has been replaced by atoms that were not part of your body 7 years ago!
But YOU are the same you that YOU that you have always been! It is impossible for You to be the physical body! Please, I'm not taking the trouble to explain this just to be argumentative or to play mental jousting. Because of your question, you must be a very smart person. I think that you can see the truth of what I'm saying if you can let go of all the crap that you learned in school and think for yourself.
Some person may play some semantic games and try to tell you that you are not the same you that you were seven years ago. That's ludicrous!
If all of the atoms of my physical have been exchanged but I am the same me, then it is impossible for me to be the physical body. This means that the fairy tale that we were taught in evolutionary biology, that when the pre-humans brain and nervous system became complicated enough, we became conscious, self aware beings, is total crap!
There are 800 million Catholic Christians in the world. If you can believe that the lay Catholics have been lied to by a million priests and bishops (I'm not saying that that is the case), so that the priests and bishops will have status, an easy living, and control over others; how hard is it to believe that Western scientists have done the same thing for the same reasons.
The things I have said are the beginnings of Hindu Jnana Yoga and the philosophy of Advaita Vedenta. It is possible to do Jnana Yoga exercises to EXPERIENCE the truth of what I've said. There is no belief in anything necessary to begin.
I am a Catholic Christian but I see no discrepancies in what Jesus said in the Bible and the philosophy of Advaita Vedanta. In fact Advaita Vedanta says clearly, most of what Jesus said using figures of speech. I do not say this to diminish anything about Jesus. He is my Lord and Savior. But He is often hard to understand. Most Protestant ministers and many Catholic Priests don't understand Him and if you listen to them and have a brain, it's easy to pick holes in what they say. You have to read for yourself.
YOU are important! The real YOU will not die when your body dies. There are yogas that can bring you to experience the truth of this for yourself. I'm speaking of Raja Yoga, Bhakti Yoga, Karma Yoga, and Jnana Yoga. Not the stretches that are pawned off on gullible Westerners as Yoga!
Actually, if a person were to actually take what Jesus said literally and do that, they would be doing: Raja, Bhakti, Karma, and Jnana Yogas, all at the same time!

In a thousand years, no one will even know that you existed, unless you're a Hitler or Napoleon type person. Oh you may be a footnote in an ancient family tree or your name etched in a tombstone, but even they will eventually turn to dust.

Life is important as long as you are living your purpose of it. Without purpose, everything is meaningless.
