Does Iowa pretty forecast this potential nomination usually?

Golden showers - he's 27% the favorite in Iowa. I just read it on a Yahoo! News Wire Poll. He's ahead both Clinton and Obama.

Not necessarily, but it's an important first step. Last I saw he and Hillary were just about neck-and-neck in Iowa, and she's winning New Hampshire handily.

If Edwards is to have any shot, he has to win Iowa.

It is unclear how accurate either Iowa or New Hampshire are in forecasting eventual nominee of either party. In some years, the winner in Iowa gets the nomination, in other years the nomination goes to someone else. The same is true of the winner in New Hampshire. In some years, the eventual nominee did not win either state.

What the early primary and caucus states do is weed out the candidates who do not have substantial support. Especially given the number of primaries on February 5th next year, candidates will need to finish in the top 4 in Iowa and New Hampshire and get some wins on February 5th. Any candidate who does that will get to compete in the other February primaries which will probably determine the nominee.

I like Edwards the most of the three frontrunners, but Bill Clinton lost Iowa. So Iowa has a big hand, but not a definite one. John Edwards needs to win Iowa, then use the momentum to win Nevada, where he has strong ties to labor unions, then snatch his native state South Carolina from Barack Obama. That should knock Barack Obama out of the race, and establish John Edwards as the serious alternative to Hillary Clinton, who will have NH and Fla headed into Super Tuesday, where she will most likely win NY and Ca.
