its exactly because we don't want to think about them that we have to think about them to not want to think about them. Eg - "don't think of a monkey."

Because the things that we dont want to think about. Are the things that stick around our heads the most. Unfortunately. While they are fresh anyways.

because the more we try to forget or let something go it doesn't work. Once you have something in your memory it is stuck there forever... I hate it. For me I tend to "pray it away" and it works and then when it comes back and do it again.. like the "raise and repeat" thing with shampoo

Thats what happens to me at night when i'm trying to goto sleep and I cant stop thinking about stuff.
It's hard to shut that thing off.

Its a psychological hang up by trying not to think about it we actually force ourselves to think about it

it's thought of us not wanting to think of them which makes us/ wants us to think of them that's why we still tend to think of them :)
